When the art of silkscreen printing meets the essential hand drawing, perhaps we may talk about Prihatmoko Catur aka Moki. With his dreadlock-hairdo along with well-defined free-form style of paintings Moki successfully conjoined silkscreen process with sharp characters drawing. Before he began to mix these two different styles, Moki worked as a silkscreen processor for Cemeti Art House dealing with handmade-silkscreen posters for publications and also for Jogjakarta-based indie comic emporium Daging Tumbuh. Moki is well-known for welding the music element into triumphant hand paintings. He gained influence from music that he loves – usually shoegaze and psychedelic – and takes the iconic image of favorite musician or even the theme of a song that inspired him the most, then he transforms those ”ingredients” into his works. So it is not so strange if we found his art tells alot of musical excursion. In his previous project, he took his lifetime musician idol and splashed them onto acrylic or canvas, combining silkscreen printing and hand drawing. Thom Yorke, Nina Parson, Liam Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix are a few names that he had explored through a sophisticated self-indulgence work of art. And the result is, His Thom Yorke painting is soon to be displayed in ”Korea Art Season 2009” some time in this year. Besides dealing with music as his endless inspiration and influence, he also pay attention to the works of Jordan Crane – a lowbrow artist – and The Print Mafia.
Just like a true artist that could not be restricted in a matter of media explorations, Moki began to cope with various merchandise as his medium, he really loves cotton/t-shirts as his fetish. Character-oriented design in a weird manner is his approach in every of his t-shirt designs. While taking himself deep into the world of paintings, He has many projects throwing in some bands, He is listed as a member of Jogjakarta shoegaze heroes and dark instrumentalia-lullaby band, Airport Radio where he plays drum. Airport Radio is scheduled to unleash their phenomenal debut album this year, while their newest animated-video is finally done a few months ago. Talk about his upcoming project, he had begun to do his ”Proyek Bangun Tidur” / ”Wake Up Project” which he captured his feelings and activities he had right after woken up from his sleep in the morning, in a whole week and transforms them all in a sketches and drawings.
